When ordering flared ends, please specify overall length required. Minimum length = flare radius plus 20mm for joiner

Donut rings

These are made from two layers of 19mm MDF as detailed here. They add 6mm plus a 13mm flare to the port intake, and are finished with three coats of polyurethane to give a smooth surface. They're a pretty good fit, but due to variations in PVC thickness, you may need to give your joint a light sand and then wipe over with polyurethane.

If you order any donut rings to be used with an elbow, you will also need a length of plain PVC pipe. If ordering for multiple ports, the lengths are added before costing. For example if you need two lengths of 400mm each, that is counted as one lot of 1m or less.

Pipe Diameter - mm Cost per metre
86 mm $5
103 mm $10
152mm $15

Joiners

Joiners are a segment of pipe that has been stretched to fit over the port. Length is approx 40mm.

Pipe sizes

The sizes used are in mm, and are standard IPLEX PVC pipe, available from any plumbing supplier

Stormwater Pipe

Nominal Dia Mean Outside Diameter Mean Wall Thickness Mean Inside Diameter
90 90 1.9 86.2

Sewer Pipe

Nominal Dia Class Mean Outside Diameter Mean Wall Thickness Mean Inside Diameter
100 SN6 110.2 3.0 103
150 SN4 160.3 4.0 152
225 SN4 250.4 6.1 238

Tolerances

Overall port length +/- 5mm for one-piece ports
Finished outside diameter of port flange +/- 3mm
It's always wise to wait till you recieve your ports before machining the opening in your enclosure

Calculating required length

A flared port shares part of the air in the flare with the surrounding air, meaning that the port appears shorter.
The generally accepted adjustment is to subtract half the flare radius from the physical length to obtain the effective length. If both ends of the port are flared, the adjustment is done for each flare. See the Test Ports page for examples

Effective length of flared port

Donut rings add 13mm to the effective length.
If your design is using any bends, measure the length through the centreline of the bends. Note that different brands of bends can have different lengths.
See the Sample arrangements page for some suggestions plus dimensions of the donut rings.

Selected 4 and 6 inch flared ports from this range are now available from Affordable Drivers marketed under the colloports brandname. Their price includes shipping, and they accept all the normal forms of online payment, making your purchase that much easier

Regardless of whether you buy ports direct, or via Affordable drivers, if you are not happy with the quality of the flares, return them and I'll refund your money, less the cost of postage.

Overseas Orders

I'm happy to supply overseas, but the postage can add up. A rough estimate is to add 50% to the cost of the ports
For example a 1kg package Airmail to the UK costs $30.85 AUD or £14.89 UK
The same package to the USA costs $24.70 Australian or $23.25 US dollars ..... prices and exchange rate 10th May 2008

For a package up to 2kg, this rises to $58.50 Australian or £28.25 UK
To the US it's $46.50 Australian or $43.76 US Dollars

You may also incur import duty and VAT depending on where you are, although for small packages, you're usually exempt
The most recent shipment to the UK took 9 days.
The most recent shipment to the USA took 12 days.

Preferred method of payment is via a Bank Cheque in Australian dollars. NOTE: Your bank will charge you an additional fee to issue in Australian dollars. Alternatively, you can get the cheque drawn up in your local currency, however, it costs me $15 AUD to convert the cheque into Australian dollars at my end, so this needs to be added to your order. I also cop a long delay for the cheque to be cleared when it is not in Aussie dollars.

Supply of donuts alone is not recommended because local pipe sizes are going to be slightly different to those here. Obviously donuts plus flared ends or one piece ports are fine

Installation Tips

PVC segments are best glued together with quick setting epoxy (5 minute Araldite). The ports need to be glued into position because there is not enough room for screws - epoxy or silcone can be used.

This photo shows the panel surface rebated and chamfered to allow flush mounting. If you are using a one-piece port, the hole needs to be opened up right to the edge of a 5mm wide rebate.

Rebate depth

The port can used to check the depth of the rebate. In this orientation, the port should be slightly below the surface to account for the extra space taken up by the flare's curvature.

Checking rebate depth

Another method would be to use a rollover bit and push it below the surface by the thickness of the flare.
