"Flare-it" version notes

Version 2.51

  • Changed urls on "About" form to point to new domain (www.subwoofer-builder.com)

Version 2.50

  • Added numbers to Options reminder graphic
  • Added extra panel to About form showing how flare radius is measured

Version 2.40

  • Added support for Imperial measurements. Can swap between metric, fractional inches or decimal inches

Version 2.30

  • Simple mode added, allowing unused controls to be hidden, and graph and status line operation to be optimised

Version 2.20

  • Option added to select "masking by content" allowance of either 15% for music, or 30% for Home Theatre

Version 2.10

  • Provided options to allow user to select seating and content allowances for both boundary and core chuffing
  • All options and data are saved. Requires that flare-it is able to create an ini file in the same directory as the software is located. May not work if loading software from a shared drive
  • Graph can now be clicked to display velocities for selected frequency in status line
  • Slight tweak to algorithm for determining core velocity to more accurately reflect the value for 100mm ports

  • Changed formulas are:

Determining Limiting velocity - no allowances added (Velocity in metres/second, Diameter in mm)

For ports smaller than 103mm in diameter

Limiting velocity = 10 +[ (diameter squared) * (19.5 / 10,000) ]

For ports larger than 103mm in diameter

Limiting velocity = 31 + [(diameter squared - 10,600) * (8.5 / 15,000)]

Version 2.00

  • Full re-write to take into account round two test result
  • Added calculation of limiting velocity based on "core" turbulence
  • Added adjustment for changes in performance with frequency
  • Added graphical display showing performance across frequencies
  • Added facility to to Auto-calculate minimum flare to suit user-specified velocities
  • Added "Cruise control" to recalculate required velocities as port diameter or number of ports is changed
  • Warning screen for diameters above 160mm

  • Formulas used are:

Determining Limiting velocity - no allowances added (Velocity in metres/second, Diameter in mm)

For ports smaller than 100mm in diameter:

    Limiting velocity = 10 +[ (diameter squared) * (19 / 10,000) ]

For ports larger than 100mm in diameter:

    Limiting velocity = 29 + [(diameter squared - 10,000) * (10 / 15,000)]

Determining chuffing velocity when operating below the limiting velocity - Includes 25% allowance for seating position and 15% allowance for content

Adjustments for frequency

At limiting velocity:

At 35hz, the limiting velocity is higher than the 30hz figure by +23%.

At 25hz, the limiting velocity is lower than the 30hz figure by -33%

Below limiting velocity:

At 35hz, the usable velocity is higher than the 30hz figure by +29%

At 25hz, the usable velocity is lower than the 30hz figure by -28%

At 20hz, the usable velocity is lower than the 30hz figure by -37%

Version 1.03

  • Added field for Peak Flow. This is the volume of air that would be moved per second, if the air flowed continuously in one direction at the maximum allowable velocity for the current flare size. Allows a starting port / flare combination to be entered initially, and then port diameter can be changed, allowing you to see what sized flare would be required to flow the same amount of air.

Version 1.02

  • Added warning screen when Area Ratio > 4
  • Added warning screen when port diameter > 110mm
  • Added ability to re-enable warnings

Version 1.01

  • Added warning screen when velocity exceeds 34 m/sec. Includes "Don't warn me again" option

Version 1.00

  • Initial build based on round one test results used the following formula - Includes 25% allowance for seating position and 15% allowance for content. (Velocity in metres/second, Diameter in mm)
